David Welsh + Christine Major
Welsh + Major Architects is a design based architecture and urban design practice established in Sydney in 2004 by principals David Welsh and Chris Major. Since then the practice has grown to be involved in a wide range of innovative projects and has established a reputation for delivering responsive and engaging architecture in the public and private realm.
Welsh + Major’s portfolio of work spans across public spaces and private homes, restaurants and bars, galleries and shops, workplaces, and the reinvention of historic buildings. Their work seeks an artistic resolution of programme and detail with a focus on context and landscape, memory and material.
Their work has been recognised with numerous awards for design excellence, including National and NSW awards from the Australian Institute of Architects for Residential Architecture, Heritage and Small Projects. They have also been the recipients of the BDP Sustainability Award, Houses and ThinkBrink awards. The work of the practice has been published both locally and internationally.
The principals of the practice are actively involved in Architectural education, having taught at the University of Technology Sydney, University of Newcastle and the University of Sydney. The practice is an A+ member of the in the Australian Institute of Architects and Chris and David are involved in numerous professional bodies including participating in awards juries, Co-Chairing the Medium Practice Forum and sitting on the National Committee for Gender Equity.
